Cordage Class

Pop-Up Workshop
Saturday, October 5th, 3-6 PM

For over sixty thousand years, humans have used the ancient technique of cordage—hand-twisting fibers into twine—as a fundamental way to adapt and thrive. This timeless skill, rooted in history, is both accessible and meditative.

Join artist Saoirse Byrne in this special pop-up workshop where we’ll transform sentimental fabrics into beautiful, functional lengths of cord. These creations can be used as gifts, serve as a hat band, hang as a Day of the Dead garland, or be worn as meaningful jewelry. Whether you consider yourself crafty or not, cordage is simple, repetitive, and leaves space for conversation or quiet reflection.

What to bring:
Bring fabric that holds significance to you—a worn-out favorite t-shirt, a scarf from a loved one, or even a rag with memories attached. Lightweight natural fiber fabrics with stains or holes work perfectly. If you’d rather not start with something special, extra material will be provided.

Cost: Special community sliding scale! $25-$75
Ticket required

Suggested for ages 8 and up, as motor skills, patience, and focus are needed. However, cordage is a process that can even be done with your eyes closed! We look forward to connecting with you in this creative, heartfelt practice.

About the Instructor

Saoirse Byrne

Trained as a fashion designer with a BFA at Rhode Island School of Design and having graduated with an MBA in Sustainability from Presidio World College in San Francisco among the pioneering cohort, it is in the detail and quality of fine craftsmanship and the wildness of raw materials that I seek the balance.

My exploration of cordage began over twelve years ago with learning to twist wild harvested plants with Tamara Wilder. Curious, I applied the process to the abundance of materials in my studio and life. I had held onto my great grandmother’s threadbare handkerchief for decades- precious but altogether unusable. As cordage it became a strong, loving reminder of her- a necklace that I could wear and a process that I could share.

There are people with great skill and generosity who have kept these skills alive and have shared their learning. I am grateful to them and it is a joy to pass these skills on. Learn more about Saoirse & see her work!
